Halloween is right around the corner, and we cannot wait to celebrate it with a fresh set of costume, decorations, parties and pranks! While some people do not go all the way as tradition states, it is still a day of being with one another, and having fun!

We cannot let traditions fade, and that is why- here’s a Halloween vocabulary that you can pass on to the generation-next. This list is for all those people who want to remember everything that this day is about. Update your busy lives, and pass on these words on to the growing kids while you reminisce your childhood.

1. Spooky

How can we talk about Halloween, and not have spooky on the list? It goes right on top because this is indeed the essence of this day. To give you a blast from the past, this holiday began to dress up, and scare the ghosts. The entire idea behind celebrating this day started with scary setups and an eerie aura.

2. Costume

Costumes are a big part of this festival. From children to adults, everyone revels in the joy of dressing up as various characters. Typically, one used to wear costumes that resembled ghosts and witches in line with the essence of this day. With time, very few choose to dress up in that manner; you will now find costumes of various celebrities and even superheroes!

3. Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat is simply the most enjoyable part of Halloween, wherein dressed up children go door to door. No sooner do they scream trick or treat, that person behind the door should either give them a treat, lest the little ones in the costumes trick them.

4. Candy

Candy is the only ‘treat’ that one can hand out to the tricking children. The adults keep designed bowls full of candies to offer to children visiting their homes. It is that time of the year when the kids aren’t rationed on the amount of sweet they should eat.

5. Jack-o’-lanterns

One of the most popular decorations, Jack-o’-lanterns are a part of several households. Evidently, these have an ancient existence for this spooky day. People cut out eyes, nose and an open lip on emptied pumpkins. Once done, they place a lit candle inside, making it a scary face to frighten the trick-or-treaters.

6. Black Cats

Sadly, these innocent animals have much to do with Halloween and its celebrations. People in the olden times were superstitious; they believed that witches had the power to transform into black cats. Apparently, coming across this animal was an omen. Even though much in the traditions now, some lovers of this festival place images or statues of black cats outside their homes.

7. Dracula

Needless to say, Dracula used to be one of the much-used characters for dressing up. Even though people now have several options to pick from, the years that went by saw a lot of people dressed as Dracula. The white canine teeth with drops of blood underneath sure scared people on the roads.

8. Halloween Party

One event even adults look forward to across the year is this party where they can be themselves, and maybe even more. Without taking care of the children, adults can dress up in costumes of their liking. Work is never as fun as much on this one day!

9. Gloomy

As anticipated, everything looks gloomy on this day of the year. Even in the day time, people decorate their houses in such a manner that it looks dark. Some homely streets even turn off the street lights to give their children an impactful and scary night when they are out looking for candies.

10. Goblin

You might have seen goblins in several cartoons and read about them in books too. One famous one of these was Noddy, where two goblins roamed the city only to trouble others. They are known for pranking people around. Consequently, some people dress up as goblins to prank some of the people they know in their vicinity.

11. Skeleton and bones

Since ages, skeletons and bones have a horror-like feel on people, which is enough a decoration to add to this day. One may find skeletons and pieces of bones lying across a black background at several places to depict the traditions of this day. In fact, some people even wear such costumes to scare people in the dark.

12. Zombie

Looking like a zombie is one of the newest things covered in the past few years; people enjoy taking the character of dead people, out to bite the rest. As a joke, some parties even cast a zombie attack from where people have to escape to save their lives! They recount these tales for long later!

13. Magic

There’s no Halloween without magic; magicians take long strides on this day to perform at their best and entertain people. Young magicians even practice tiny little tricks to entertain the people opening doors with candy, only to score more candy!

14. Superstitions and Spells

This might be no surprise, but several rituals surrounding this day, and the activities that occur are all results of superstition. For some, the day in itself is one! Since witches are seen as evil women who cast spells on innocent people, some trick-or-treaters even practice some fake spells to scare the people around.

15. Spider Webs

Several houses will sport a fake spider web outside the house, in the attempt to scare the little ones roaming the streets. As a part of the decoration, some playful adults lay webs to trap those entering their houses to make achieving candy even difficult.

16. Death

A reoccurring character on Halloween nights, people draw this inspiration from several movies. Such a person will always carry a sickle or a scythe to frighten those around. One may also call ‘death’ a ‘Grim Reaper’, for he is always sad, and holds a reaping instrument. The moment you find a hooded man hiding his face on this day, know it is ‘death’.

17. Doorbell

One might wonder why a doorbell is on this vocabulary list, but if you follow this day ardently, you would know why. To keep things as eerie as possible to entertain passers-by, some of them take the extra effort to install a scary sound on their doorbells. It acts as a constant reminder to those coming by, and those inside about the essence of the day.

18. Pie

With all the fear, comes the yummy pie! Several households opt to prepare this traditional dish on Halloween’s night. After all the fun, fear and candies, families gather for a wholesome meal, followed with a pie to mark the end of the day. It marks the happiness of being successful in warding off all evil!

You’re all caught up on the basics of the words that relate to the scariest, yet the most entertaining day! Go ahead! Here’s wishing you all a Happy Halloween 2019!
