Can you relate to those feelings when we say something all of a sudden? If you can, then you Should know that interjection has so much to do with that feeling. Rather, it has a lot to do with the expression of such feelings. Here is our next lesson in our elementary grammar section where we’re covering one of the simplest parts of speech. Now, even though it is very simple it is something that not a lot of people know.

Let’s learn and understand more about this part of the speech.

Interjection

1. What is an interjection?

One of the simplest definitions of an interjection is a word which expresses some sudden feeling or
emotion.

2. What is an example of this part of speech?

what is an interjection

Hello! What are you doing here?

In the above example, you will note that the word hello is the interjection. It clearly indicates a sudden expression of happiness on seeing someone.

3. What is a distinct quality of An interjection?

One way you will always know that the word used in the sentence is the part of speech we are
discussing right now is that it is always followed by an exclamation mark. Although, there are some
exceptions about which we will read further in this lesson.

4. Do you have to use an interjection at the beginning of the sentence only?

No, there is no hard and fast rule about the placement of an interjection. The only rule is that it should express a surprise which could be a happy or a sad one. In case we want to place this surprise word in the middle of the sentence, then it would be difficult to succeed the word it with an exclamation mark. Therefore, in such scenarios, we usually put the interjection word in between two commas.

We can also place the word in between brackets when we want to place it in the middle of a sentence. Let’s take a look at an example to understand better.

With the launch of this new fast train, It will take only an hour [ wow! ] to get to the other side of the
town.

I may not have made my parents proud, but, hey, they still love me.

5. Can there be more than one interjection in a sentence?

interjection examples

Yes! We can use more than one interjection in a sentence depending on why we want to use it. For
example, Oh! Ouch! This hurts really bad.

So see, we can use it more than once if required.

6. Can we use a group of words to express these sudden emotions?

Absolutely! We can certainly use a group of words to express these certain emotions. Some such
words are, for shame!, Well done!, Good gracious!, ah me!.

7. When is it inappropriate to use these expression words?

Interjections are free to use whenever we want to. They go well in our informal writing, speeches, and daily communication. Although, it is inappropriate to use them in formal situations or formal writing. Somehow, it could give out the notion That you may not be treating the work as fun, which not everybody appreciates.

And there it is, one of the simplest lessons one could ever learn in the English language. We just learned a whole new topic and it didn’t seem like a lot, did it? Well, then this one sure puts us in a good mood.
